Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation. Minimally Invasive Treatment for Aortic Stenosis

At Fujita, we have a team solely dedicated to performing TAVI, consisting of cardiologists,
cardiovascular surgeons, anesthetists, cardiac ultrasound physicians, technicians and nurses.
In February 2015, we were certified as a TAVI performing hospital, the first university hospital to be approved in the Chubu region.

What is Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation(TAVI)?

Fujita was certified as a TAVI performing hospital on March 2, 2014. TAVI is an abbreviation for transcatheter aortic valve implantation. It is a minimally invasive treatment for aortic stenosis using catheters and artificial valves. This opened a new door for elderlies and people with heart disease, who would not have been able to survive the conventional open-heart surgery.

What is Aortic Valve Stenosis?

The aorta is the main artery that carries blood out of the heart, and the aortic valve, formed by 3 leaflets, is there to prevent blood from flowing back to the heart. Aortic stenosis occurs when the valve becomes hard and loses flexibility due to reasons such as arteriosclerosis. It loses range of motion, reducing or blocking blood flow from the heart, causing heart failure, angina, syncope etc. Without treatment, severe aortic stenosis can lead to death, thus early treatment is required.
